ABOUT PRANGSTGRÜP

The basic ethos of Prangstgrüp is simple: write intelligent sketch comedy and perform it in its real-world setting. The Prangstgrüp world is one in which supermarket shoppers suddenly break into song and dance, subway bums give advanced lectures for spare change, and prospective students antagonize their campus tour guide. And this all happens in your supermarket, on your subway car, during your campus tour. In short, Prangstgrüp has a reality TV show mentality with a sketch comedy flavor.

Prangstgrüp was created two years ago by Peter Koechley, a humorist with four years of experience writing headlines for The Onion™ , and Lyndon Kennedy, a designer who created pulsate.org, the famed underground design site. But the grüp took its shape with the current core group of six comedy filmmakers (Koechley and Kennedy, plus Jonathan Schwartz, Trey McArver, Brian Jacobs, and Adam Jentleson). All six are Columbia University seniors graduating this May. Together, they write everything from script to score, plan everything from cinematography to choreography—and perform.

The six members produce the sketches with a Sony VX-2000 and a Canon GL-1 camera, Sennheiser and BeachTek audio equipment, and two Final Cut Pro systems. Another dozen students contribute music, acting talent, and ideas on an occasional basis. The average Prangstgrüp piece runs about 3 minutes, but there are also several 40-second pieces, and some longer work (5-8 minutes).

Prangstgrüp began as a web site, but its real future is in television. The ideal format for Prangstgrüp is a weekly 30-minute show. The grüp has spent the last two years refining its approach to internet television production, and has achieved an online experience unparalleled since the heyday of heavy.com. Prangstgrüp is now developing a television package as engaging as its web interface.

Prangstgrüp is currently a non-profit venture operating on pocket money in between classes. The members of Prangstgrüp are full-time students in Neuroscience, Film, Electrical Engineering, Philosophy, Psychology, and History; they also produce the Varsity Show (Columbia's 109-year-old annual comedy musical), record with an indie-rock band, design websites professionally, intern at the Daily Show, and hold down five jobs to finance the grüp. Their post-graduation plan is to continue Prangstgrüp full-time as their sole endeavor.
